My work arises out of re-thinking everyday objects and the ways in which they help us understand our world. I attempt to alter and at times break their intended purpose. Doing this often provides me with new pictures of the world- new ways of seeing and expressing. Sometimes, such a process of breaking, building, and altering fails the object and at times it transforms the object. So far, I have worked with objects that are closely related to geography and location: the cardinal compass and the Global Positioning System (GPS). To me the compass and the GPS fulfill a visceral need of orienting ourselves, but represent two very different ways of knowing our world. I continue to explore these objects of navigation and the conceptual models that surround them: the imaginary grid of latitudes and longitudes and the idea of direction.
